Paraiba tourmalines are a fairly new addition to the world's suite of precious gemstones. Discovered in 1989, the world was introduced to the neon blue tourmaline gem first found in the Brazilian state of Paraiba. Similar discoveries were found in Mozambique, Africa not too long afterward. This gemstone has a unique glow attributed to small amounts of copper in each stone's chemical composition. Also referred to as Cuprian tourmaline.
